Projects that Require Peening

Many different projects will require peening due to the quality needed. This is a technique employing many small spherical balls called shot that strike the surface of metal. The purpose is to create an indentation or dimples all over the surface. The goal is to increase the life of a metal part that is used for fabrication or an industrial manufacturing process. Increase Fatigue Life

Repetitive stresses placed on a metal part can lead to fatigue and eventual failure. Cyclical loads cause the bending and twisting of metal over time. One example of this is the leaf and coil springs that are on a typical automobile. A drive shaft is another metal part subjected to cyclical loads. The peening of any metal parts will increase the fatigue life and allow the part to last longer.

Preparing Parts for Plating

The plating process on metal parts can often leave fine cracks that cannot be easily seen. Metal that has been prepared by shot peening prior to plating will prevent the formation of cracks after plating. This is needed to prevent cracks from forming in the substrate of metal parts.

Straighten Deformed Parts

Metal parts that are deformed during the manufacturing process can often be straightened then peening is done. Certain areas of the metal will have peening applied to produce a desired result. Many types of structural shapes made out of metal sheeting, such as a bulkhead, may have areas that are deformed. A piece of metal can also be deformed when it has been heat-treated.

Reducing Stress Corrosion Cracking

Stresses that has occurred to metals after they have been formed make them susceptible to corrosion. A high-strength material is most likely to be more susceptible to corrosion due to residual stresses. Stress in the metal surface will interact with corrosive elements. Shot peening on a high-strength metal part is able to reduce corrosion cracking due to residual stress.

Alter Part Dimensions

Selective peening of a metal part can increase or reduce its size. This process may be done when a part is being manufactured or rebuilt. One of the benefits of peening is it can decrease the diameter of holes and increase the size of a shaft.

Reduce Notch Sensitivity

Certain types of high-strength steel is sometimes susceptible to notching or fatigue cracking. A crack is more likely to occur with steel the stronger it is. However, the surface of a part will be improved when a shot peening process is performed on the steel. This process allows steel to have a longer lifespan than steel that has not had any peening applied. Springs are one type of metal part using this process.
